Great Travel Game

December 31, 2007

If you think you know a lot about geography, try the Travel IQ Challenge. It’s an online game that provides you with a map and then asks you to locate places as closely as possible with your cursor. The goal is to come as close as possible in the least amount of time (you score points for both). They start out easy with well-known world cities and then it gets more difficult with each succeeding level. Can you locate Hamilton, Bermuda?

TED, Ideas Worth Spreading

December 7, 2007

“TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from those three worlds. Since then its scope has become ever broader. This site makes the best talks and performances from TED available to the public, for free. Almost 150 talks from our archive are now available, with more added each week. These videos are released under a Creative Commons license, so they can be freely shared and reposted.”

What attendees say about TED:

“Thank you a thousand times for inviting me to your wonderful TED conference. I regret not only that I was not at every moment of it, but especially that I missed all the previous ones! It was a great and stimulating experience as well as a lot of fun.”
— Rupert Murdoch, chair & CEO, The News Corporation

“At each TED conference something important happens to me: a new business, a new friend. I return exhilarated.”
— Nicholas Negroponte, director emeritus & co-founder, MIT Media Lab

“Sign me up for next year.”
— Al Gore, activist

“I wasn’t prepared for this conference to be so profound. The combined IQ of the attendees is incredible.”
Bill Gates, Microsoft

“A mind-opening experience. If it opens any more, I am afraid it will float past the ozone layer.”
Amy Tan, author

“It was INCREDIBLE. I had a wonderful time and met a thousand fascinating people.”
Malcolm Gladwell, author

In their inimitable fashion, Consumer Reports tossed a group of 6-12 year-olds into a room full of toys and watched what happened. The result is their list of favorite toys for this year, broken down by genre: arts & crafts, building toys, electronic toys, games, learning toys and video games. To see the specific toys, click on ‘How the toys stacked up’. There are also links to toys for babies and toys for preschoolers.
